Peruvian Nephrite - Green Jade
Peruvian Nephrite - Green Jade
Nephrite green jade is a high-quality variety of jade comprising a fibrous microcrystalline matrix of amphibole minerals rich in calcium and magnesium.
Distinguished by its warm green hues and exceptional toughness, nephrite is prized for decorative and jewelry applications worldwide.
At Gemrock International, we ethically source, produce, and supply premium nephrite green jade, combining responsible extraction with rigorous processing and transparent supply-chain practices.
What Is Nephrite Green Jade?
Nephrite is one of the two minerals traditionally referred to as jade (the other being jadeite). Unlike jadeite — which is a pyroxene mineral with broader color range and higher hardness — nephrite is an amphibole mineral with:
- A fibrous interlocking structure
- A Mohs hardness of approximately 6.0–6.5
- Color range from light to deep green
- Greasy to waxy luster when polished
- Translucent to opaque appearance
This fibrous structure gives nephrite remarkable toughness, making it both durable and suitable for carving and finishing into cabochons and decorative objects.
Peruvian Origin & Material Quality
Our Nephrite Green Jade originates from selected Peruvian deposits where geological conditions yield material with:
- Consistent green coloration
- Homogeneous texture
- Structural integrity for cutting and polishing
While almost all green jade can be used for the production of beautifull decor objects, only a small fraction of jade meets the strict criteria for jewelry-grade material concerning color, texture, and absence of disruptive inclusions.
Gemrock applies professional grading to ensure only premium material is processed for cabochons and jewelry work.
Top-quality Premium-cut Nephrite Green Jade Cabochons
Only our most experienced master carvers take part in Gemrocks´ cabochon and jewelry production. Indeed, it takes many months of training to be able to produce a flawless premium-cut cabochon.
Additionally, our raw material quality standards are probably the world’s highest. As a result, only about 10 % of the rough rock coming from the mine is considered jewelry-grade.
Check our professional Nephrite Green Jade Gemstone Quality Standard and avoid wasting your money on low-grade material.

Ethical Mining & Production Standards
At Gemrock, ethical responsibility extends throughout the entire value chain — from extraction to finished product. Our approach includes:
- Sourcing from legal, licensed operations, never from illegal or conflict-financing mining
- In-house processing, ensuring full control over lapidary quality and labor conditions
- Fair wages, legal contracts, and acute worker safety standards in our lapidary workshop.
- Water and energy savings, and material recycling within the production process
- Active tracking and reduction of carbon impact, including support for habitat restoration projects
This ensures that every piece of nephrite jade supplied carries traceable ethical integrity across mining, processing, and distribution.
Cultural Significance of Nephrite – Māori Greenstone Tradition
Nephrite jade holds profound cultural importance in the traditions of the Māori people of New Zealand, where it is known as pounamu or greenstone. For centuries, Māori communities have carved nephrite into tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects, including the well-known hei-tiki pendants and mere hand weapons. Due to its exceptional toughness and fine-grained structure, nephrite was highly valued not only for ornamentation but also for functional and symbolic use.
Historically, pounamu deposits in New Zealand were limited to specific regions, making the material rare and deeply significant within tribal identity, lineage, and intergenerational inheritance. Carved objects were often passed down as heirlooms and became embodiments of ancestry, craftsmanship, and social status.
From a mineralogical perspective, the nephrite used in Māori carving is structurally the same amphibole mineral as high-quality nephrite found in other parts of the world. The Peruvian nephrite supplied by Gemrock International shares the same fibrous microcrystalline composition and mechanical properties that make it suitable for carving and polishing. While cultural meaning is rooted in the Māori tradition and geography of New Zealand, the underlying material — nephrite — is geologically equivalent.
Gemrock International acknowledges the cultural heritage associated with nephrite while supplying responsibly sourced Peruvian material for contemporary carving and jewelry applications.
Industrial & Functional Uses
High-quality nephrite green jade has distinct industrial and functional relevance:
Jewelry Manufacturing: Nephrite is commonly cut into cabochons and set into fine jewelry due to its toughness and polishability.
Decorative Stone & Carving:
Thanks to its fibrous structure, nephrite is suitable for:
Sculptural carving
Freeform decorative objects
Polished shapes and figures
Lapidary Material
Due to superior toughness, nephrite is valued by lapidaries for objects that require resistance to chipping and cracking.
These uses reflect the material’s structural properties and processing suitability rather than historical ‘energy’ claims.
Why Gemrocks Nephrite Green Jade Crystal Products are truly ethical:
Founded in 2017 by biologist and professional nature conservationist Stefan Austermühle, Gemrock was born to be more than just a crystal wholesale business. As a result, Nature conservation and ethical workers’ treatment throughout the entire production chain are at the core of our business. We are changing the crystal industry for the better one crystal at a time.
- We do not source our raw materials from conflict areas, from mines that employ children, from drug production areas, or mining that finances genocide and civil war.
- All our gemstones, silver, and gold come from legal sources. We do not support illegal mining or shadow business.
- Our entire production (crystal carving, silver and goldsmithing, as well as jewelry production is in-house. We control 100% of the production chain.
- Gemrock employees are paid fair salaries higher than the industry average. They are hired under legal labor contracts with all legally required labor benefits. Excellent work is motivated with bonuses and our employees get a share of the company’s annual profits.
- Hiring is independent of any non-work related factors (gender, skin color, nationality, or else). Only knowledge and labor quality do matter.
- We offer our employees safe labor conditions.
- Saving water and energy, and re-using and recycling materials to the maximum is an ongoing effort.
- We constantly measure our carbon footprint and neutralize our climate impact by financing a tree-planting project.
The maximum possible transparency is Gemrocks’ most important communication rule. You can find ample information about our ethical business in our blog (on this website) and on all of our social networks. For more details on our ethical standards, read here:
