Serpentinite from Peru - Properties, Processing & Ethical Production
About Serpentinite
Ethical serpentinite stone production requires geological knowledge, responsible extraction, and precise processing — all core principles at Gemrock International.
Serpentinite is a metamorphic rock formed through the hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic mantle-derived rocks, resulting in a complex group of magnesium-rich silicate minerals.
Known for its distinctive green tonalities, structural variability, and smooth carving behavior, serpentinite has been utilized by human civilizations for thousands of years in decorative, ceremonial, architectural, and functional applications.
Peru hosts significant serpentinite deposits distinguished by their chromatic depth, textural homogeneity, and favorable mechanical properties.
Gemrock International transforms this natural resource into high-grade materials for jewelry components, decorative objects, architectural applications, and collector specimens.
Our vertically integrated production model ensures traceable ethical sourcing, advanced manufacturing precision, environmental responsibility, and consistent quality control throughout the entire supply chain.
Geological Properties of Ethical Serpentinite Stone
Serpentinite forms through the metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and dunite under hydrothermal conditions. This process, known as serpentinization, involves the hydration of magnesium- and iron-rich silicate minerals, primarily olivine and pyroxene.
The resulting rock consists mainly of serpentine-group minerals, including:
- Antigorite – providing structural strength and thermal stability
- Lizardite – contributing to smooth textures and carving suitability
- Chrysotile – occurring in fibrous microscopic structures within the mineral matrix
The mineralogical composition determines mechanical behavior, surface finish, color variation, and durability. Peruvian serpentinite deposits exhibit favorable crystal intergrowth patterns, reduced fracture density, and high structural coherence, enabling superior cutting performance and surface finishing.
Geologically, Peruvian serpentinite is associated with tectonic ophiolite complexes and subduction-zone metamorphism, producing material with distinct chromatic saturation, low porosity, and stable physical performance.
Physical & Technical Properties
Serpentinite exhibits physical properties that make it suitable for a wide range of technical and decorative applications:
- Mohs Hardness: 2.5 – 4
- Density: 2.5 – 2.7 g/cm³
- Porosity: Low to moderate
- Structural Behavior: Medium ductility, excellent carving response
- Surface Finish: High polish capability
These properties allow ethically sourced serpentinite to be precisely cut, carved, polished, and stabilized for jewelry components, decorative objects, architectural panels, and design applications. While softer than true jade (nephrite), high-grade serpentinite demonstrates excellent surface stability when properly processed.
Top-quality Premium-cut Serpentinite Cabochons
Only our most experienced master carvers take part in Gemrocks´ cabochon and jewelry production. Indeed, it takes many months of training to be able to produce a flawless premium-cut cabochon.
Additionally, our raw material quality standards are probably the world’s highest. As a result, only about 25 % of the rough rock coming from the mine is considered jewelry-grade.
Check our professional Serpentinite Gemstone Quality Standard and avoid wasting your money on low-grade material.

Serpentinite Quality Classification & Sorting System
Gemrock applies a proprietary multi-stage quality classification system to ensure consistent structural integrity, surface finish performance, and aesthetic excellence in its ethical stone processing.
Structural Integrity Grading
Evaluation of:
- Internal microfractures
- Material homogeneity
- Density consistency
Chromatic Classification
Sorting based on:
- Presence of impurities
- Color saturation
- Tonal depth (preference for high contrast)
- Pattern distribution
Texture & Surface Suitability
Assessment of:
- Surface micro-porosity
- Polishing response
- Carving behavior
Only material meeting strict mechanical and aesthetic criteria enters Gemrock’s responsible serpentinite production stream. This system ensures predictable cutting yields, superior polish results, and long-term product durability

Cultural & Historical Significance
Throughout history, serpentinite has held symbolic, ceremonial, and artistic significance across multiple ancient civilizations. In Mesoamerican cultures, serpentinite was used in ritual artifacts and symbolic carvings associated with fertility, transformation, and cosmological representation. Ancient Chinese artisans frequently employed serpentine minerals as substitutes for jade in ceremonial objects and imperial ornaments.
Serpentinite played an important role in ancient Andean material culture. Serpentinite was extensively used by the Chavín civilization (900–200 BCE) in Peru for sacred carvings, ceremonial heads, and monumental sculpture, including temple reliefs and ritual artifacts.
Its deep green coloration, fine grain, and polishability made it a favored stone for ceremonial carvings, ornaments, beads, and ritual objects.
Archaeological evidence shows that serpentinite was valued primarily for its aesthetic and symbolic qualities rather than for functional tools. In Andean cosmology, green stones were broadly associated with water, fertility, and life renewal — a symbolism based on color rather than specific mineral identity.
Today, serpentinite continues to link pre-Hispanic artistic traditions with contemporary Andean craftsmanship, especially in southern Peru.
Care, Durability & Safety
Serpentinite requires appropriate handling and care to ensure long-term durability:
- Avoid prolonged exposure to acidic substances
- Protect from thermal shock and extreme temperature changes
- Clean with mild soap and water
- Store separately from harder stones
Safety Note:
Although serpentinite may contain trace chrysotile fibers at microscopic levels, finished polished products pose no health risk when properly processed. Gemrock’s cutting and finishing protocols comply with international safety standards, ensuring safe handling and consumer use.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Serpentinite
Is serpentinite the same as jade?
No. While visually similar, serpentinite and nephrite jade are distinct mineral groups with different structural and mechanical properties.
Is serpentinite durable enough for jewelry?
Yes, when properly selected, cut, and polished, high-grade serpentinite is suitable for jewelry applications, provided the customer follows the care instructions outlined on this page.
Does serpentinite contain asbestos?
Serpentinite may naturally contain chrysotile fibers within its mineral structure. Proper industrial processing eliminates any health risk in finished products.
How should serpentinite products be cleaned?
Use mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and chemical agents

Why Gemrock Serpentinite Crystal Products are truly ethical:
Founded in 2017 by biologist and professional nature conservationist Stefan Austermühle, Gemrock was born to be more than just a crystal wholesale business. As a result, Nature conservation and ethical workers’ treatment throughout the entire production chain are at the core of our business. We are changing the crystal industry for the better one crystal at a time.
- We do not source our raw materials from conflict areas, from mines that employ children, from drug production areas, or mining that finances genocide and civil war.
- All our gemstones, silver, and gold come from legal sources. We do not support illegal mining or shadow business.
- Our entire production (crystal carving, silver and goldsmithing, as well as jewelry production is in-house. We control 100% of the production chain.
- Gemrock employees are paid fair salaries higher than the industry average. They are hired under legal labor contracts with all legally required labor benefits. Excellent work is motivated with bonuses and our employees get a share of the company’s annual profits.
- Hiring is independent of any non-work related factors (gender, skin color, nationality, or else). Only knowledge and labor quality do matter.
- We offer our employees safe labor conditions.
- Saving water and energy, and re-using and recycling materials to the maximum is an ongoing effort.
- We constantly measure our carbon footprint and neutralize our climate impact by financing a tree-planting project.
The maximum possible transparency is Gemrocks’ most important communication rule. You can find ample information about our ethical business in our blog (on this website) and on all of our social networks. For more details on our ethical standards, read here:
